Art Omi: Writers is now seeking proposals for Translation Lab 2019, a 12-day special, intensive residency for four collaborating writer-translator teams in the fall of 2019.

Art Omi: Writers will host four English language translators in New York’s Hudson Valley for 12 days. These translators will be invited along with the writers whose work is being translated into English. All text-based projects—fiction, nonfiction, theater, film, poetry, etc.—are eligible.

YOUR TASKS 

• At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in the domain of translation, interpreting, multilingual communication, language and translation acquisition and teaching, terminology or language technology (research groups EQTIS, TRACE, MULTIPLES or LT3).
• You will assist in teaching activities in the English section at Bachelor’s, Master’s or Postgraduate’s level.
• You will assist in writing research proposals and the coaching of PhD students in the research group.
• You will counsel students for their bachelor papers and master’s dissertations.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR 

• You hold a doctoral degree in the domain of translation, interpreting, multilingual communication, language and translation acquisition and teaching, terminology or language technology or an equivalent degree. The degree requirements need to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
• You have already conducted research within one of these fields which can be corroborated by recent publications in international academic journals which rely on experts for the evaluation of submitted papers.
• You know English at C2 level of the European Reference Framework or as a native speaker.
• Having positively evaluated experience in offering and/or organising academic training is recommended.
• You are profoundly interested in coaching students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and/or Advanced Master’s programmes.
  

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU 

• We offer you a three-year appointment, which can be renewed once and only in exceptional circumstances for maximum three years.. The term of renewal begins immediately after the first term has expired. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a post-doctoral assistant at a university within the Flemish Community, you cannot apply for this position.
• The successful candidate is expected to begin the appointment on 1 September 2019 at the earliest.

This international conference is part of the MuséaLitté research programme on the interaction between museums and literature.

Museums are both highly symbolic spaces and sites for the construction and dissemination of culture. Writers visit, appropriate, and mediatise all kinds of museums (Public or private, natural history museums, ethnographic collections, science and technology museums, art galleries, cabinets of curiosities, world expositions) as well as places where literature is preserved and classified (libraries, literary archives, and manuscript centres).

Museums and museum-like spaces, be they real, imaginary or revisited, are discussed, represented, or narrativised in all literary genres. Participants are invited to study their representation in fiction, poetry, drama, biography, essay, exhibition notebooks and travel journals, or iconotextual works such as bandes dessinées, comics, graphic narratives, children’s picture story books, hypermedia works.

In what ways are museums, themselves sites of preservation, ordering and patrimonialisation of the material world as well as spaces of fabrication and dissemination of narratives, fictionalised or integrated into argumentative or theoretical discourse? Are museums described as spaces of mediation of living and vital art or of deadly accumulation? Do literary discourses on museums and like spaces express dislike or admiration? Between reality and fiction, material culture and representation, museums are paradoxical loci. Paul Valéry sees them as oxymorons, “a hubbub of congealed creatures” (“tumulte de créatures congelées” (“Le problème des musées”, 1923), and Michel Foucault categorises them as “heterotopias” (“Other Spaces”, 1967). As sanctuaries or common graves, spaces of knowledge and aesthetic experience between isolation and interaction, order and disorder, what poetics do they inform?

We invite proposals for 20 minute contributions in English or French focusing on European literature from any period. We welcome submissions with theoretical, comparative, or diachronical perspectives, as well as case studies.

The conference will be held in English and French.
