Désirée Schyns

Until 2000 Désirée Schyns worked in Amsterdam as a translator of literature (Furet, Kofman, Mokeddem, Sarraute, Djebar, Assouline, Huston) and literary journalist. She defended her dissertation on the representation of the Algerian Independence War in fiction written by francophone Algerian writers in 2007 at Amsterdam University. In her research she focusses on the one hand on traumatic memory in francophone fiction and testimony and on the other hand on translation. She published articles about the translation of multilingual texts (Mokeddem, Djebar) and about self-translation (Huston). Currently she is focusing on translation didactics, on cultural mediators and translation (Elisabeth De Roos-Du Perron) and on Cees Nooteboom as a translator of poetry. With Bettina Brandt she is the translator of the German work of Yoko Tawada into Dutch.
