Philippe Vanhoof is a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant of Translation Studies at the French section of the Department of Translators and Interpreters at the University of Antwerp and a member of the TricS research group (Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies) and the A* research network, that promotes interdisciplinary research within gender and sexuality studies. He obtained an MA in Interpreting from Ghent University with a thesis on the intrinsic foreignness and translation strategies of pseudo-translations. He then acquired an MA in (Literary) Translation at KU Leuven in Antwerp. His master’s thesis concerned a masochistic theorisation of the dynamics of translation from psychoanalytic and philosophical perspectives. Subsequently, he moved to France and got an MA in French Literature at the Université Jean Moulin Lyon III with a mémoire on the erotopoetics of Pierre Louÿs’ literary pornography. He combined those academic interests into his PhD project La traduction pornologique. Stylistique, herméneutique et épistémologie de la pornographie littéraire française en traduction néerlandaise, on which he is currently working. His research intersects with literary pornography in translation, (transgressive) translational stylistics, philosophy of translation and critical (translation) theory, complexity thinking and the ideological, translational and transcultural dimensions of intellectual and sexual history. Every now and then, he translates prose and poetry from French, English and Russian – for fun mostly.
