Miguel Á. Guerra is a postdoctoral assistant with a Special Research Fund (BOF) mandate in the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication at Ghent University. He holds a BA in French Philology (University of Barcelona), a MA in Comparative Literature (Paris-Sorbonne), and a PhD in Translation Studies (Ghent University, 2024).
In his doctoral dissertation, he employed a socio-historical approach to investigate the cultural and political value of translating 20th-century French novels in Spain, in opposition to the Francoist regime. His research focused on the foundational years (1956–1962) of the prestigious Biblioteca Breve book series. Parts of this research has been published in, or accepted by, Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Mutatis Mutandis and Meta.
His current postdoctoral project, Transnational Apertura, aims to re-examine the Franco regime’s cultural apertura or ‘opening’ in the 1960s through the lens of translation studies, investigating how translation practices both shaped and destabilised Spanish culture during this period. To this end, he focuses on the publishing sector of that period, zooming in on six newly established literary and human sciences book series that served as sites of translation labour and transnational contact.
