PhD fellowship in Latin-American Translation Studies

The PhD fellow will be engaged in the Research Group “Translation and Intercultural Transfer”, which is described in the link below. The PhD fellow will have the opportunity to work in close contact with different other PhD researchers affiliated to CERES (Centre for Reception Studies, KU Leuven), which favours an interdisciplinary approach that combines reception and translation studies. Via the co-supervisor the PhD project is also integrated with the Research Group “Hispanic Literatures and Cultures” at the Faculty of Arts at Leuven. This Research Group is an initiator of a EU-project about transnationality.

Project

This PhD-project will focus on the translation and reception of contemporary Peruvian fantastic narrative into the French, Anglo-Saxon, and Brazilian literary systems. More specifically, its objective is to analyze how the subtle manipulation of narrative enunciation, which is typical of the fantastic genre, is reproduced in different target languages, and the aesthetical and ideological consequences brought about by these translation processes in a transnational context. Profile

Applications are invited from candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Master in Literature or Translation, Advanced Master in Iberian and Iberoamerican Studies with great academic distinction (magna cum laude)
  • Strong skills in the area of Latin-American literature
  • Excellent command of Spanish and English
  • Good command of French, Portuguese or Dutch is an asset
  • Strong research skills and the ability to present results at international conferences and to publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • The willingness to search for extra research funding

Offer

  • The PhD fellow will receive a salary of approximately 1900 euro per month (after taxes) for a period of 4 years
  • Employment in a challenging scientific context
  • The fellowship will lead to a doctoral degree awarded by KU Leuven
  • All regular provisions for PhD fellows at KU Leuven Campus Brussels will apply, such as allocation of an office space, a laptop, and funding for participation in international conferences

PhD fellowship in Latin-American Translation Studies

De doctoraatsbursaal zal tewerkgesteld zijn in de onderzoeksgroep Vertaling en Interculturele Transfer, die in onderstaande link beschreven staat. De doctoraatsbursaal krijgt de gelegenheid in nauw contact te werken met andere doctorandi die verbonden zijn aan CERES (Centre for Reception Studies, KU Leuven), dat een interdisciplinaire aanpak nastreeft die de studie van receptie en vertaling met elkaar combineert. Via de co-promotor is het doctoraatsproject ook geïntegreerd in de onderzoeksgroep Hispanic Literatures and Cultures aan de Letterenfaculteit te Leuven. Deze onderzoeksgroep is trekker van een EU-project over transnationaliteit.

Project

Dit doctoraatsproject slaat op de vertaling en receptie van de hedendaagse Peruviaanse fantastische roman in het Franse, Angelsaksische en Braziliaanse literaire systeem. De doelstelling ervan is te onderzoeken hoe de subtiele manipulatie van de vertelling, die typisch is voor het fantastische genre,  weergegeven wordt in de verschillende doeltalen en welke de esthetische en ideologische gevolgen daarvan zijn in een transnationale context. Profiel

Graag ontvangen wij sollicitaties van kandidaten met volgend profiel

  • Master in de Letterkunde of in het  Vertalen, Advanced Master in Iberian and Iberoamerican Studies, op niveau van grote onderscheiding
  • Een uitgesproken belangstelling voor de Latijns-Amerikaanse literatuur
  • Een uitstekende kennis van het Spaans en het Engels
  • Goede kennis van het Frans, het Portugees of het Nederlands is een pluspunt
  • Gedrevenheid voor onderzoek en motivatie om de resultaten ervan voor te stellen op internationale congressen en te publiceren in tijdschriften met peer-review
  • De bereidwilligheid om op zoek te gaan naar extra fondsen voor onderzoek

Aanbod

  • De  doctoraatsbursaal krijgt een maandelijks salaris van ongeveer 1900 euro (netto) voor een periode van 4 jaar
  • De doctoraatsbursaal kan onderzoek verrichten in een stimulerende wetenschappelijke omgeving
  • De voltooiing van het project zal leiden tot de graad van doctor, toegekend door de KU Leuven
  • Alle gebruikelijke voorzieningen voor doctoraatsbursalen aan de KU Leuven Campus Brussel, zoals kantoorruimte, laptop en de nodige fondsen voor deelname aan internationale congressen
